Blessing Aminu from the backcourt will have a lot to do with that.
The former Florida Atlantic player was able to post his highest FG% mark with his man on the perimeter this season at 52.1 and his best assist percentage at 11.1. The two metrics that should be highest would be the overall offensive rating (113) and the usage percentage (22.3 percent). All signs point to a big improvement for the former No. 2 overall draft pick who was also the No. 4 scorer in the conference and the No. 3 shooting guard.
Aminu’s biggest challenge is staying healthy. He is currently dealing with a sore left Achilles and the Bulls are hoping that it will be resolved in time to be able to allow him to play through the first 30 games.
“It’s been real tough,” Aminu told reporters after practice. “I’m doing what’s asked of me, trying to help my team win that game.”
Brunell has done some good things since being released by the Lakers. He’s averaging 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds with the Magic thanks to his shooting that leads the team (58.8 percent). However, he continues to lose minutes at the end of games because of injuries and the Magic are hoping that rookie Arron Afflalo will be ready to take over.
Brunell seems to be the most natural fit for the Bulls, who are lacking a solid, versatile big man in the frontcourt with Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol suffering injuries that are unlikely to heal by October.
Aminu is the sort of veteran who can get the team going, but won’t be a player who wants to come off the bench. His playing time should be limited at the very least considering he is shooting 51.1 percent from deep, ranking in the top 10 in that category.
